Nestled at the base of Minh Dam Mountain, within the town of Phuoc Hai in Dat Do district, Phuoc Hai Fishing Village has a rich history that traces back to the villages of Luoi Re and Hai Chu. This makes it one of the oldest and most venerable fishing communities in Ba Rai – Vung Tau province. With roots reaching back nearly 300 years, the village’s evolution reflects not only the era of land opening but also the dynamic shifts in the livelihoods of Southern residents during the early days of exploring the Dang Trong region. Throughout its historical development, the fishing community of Luoi Re – Phuoc Hai has built a culturally rich and spiritually diverse life, incorporating many traditional folk colors such as marine livelihoods, the worship of General Quan Thanh De Quan, the worship of Ba Ngu Hanh, various deities, ancestors, and benevolent spirits. A shining example of these traditions is the unique Nghinh Ong Nam Hai Festival, a celebration of worship to the Whale, which stands as the largest of its kind in Vietnam.
In recent years, the tide of urbanization has swept through, transforming the landscape. In 2006, Phuoc Hai town was officially established, covering an expansive area of nearly 17km² and home to a diverse population exceeding 20,000 residents, with a predominant mix of Vietnamese and Chinese communities. Blessed with both coastal and mountainous features, thanks to the Minh Dam Mountain range, Phuoc Hai town boasts a picturesque setting and is strategically positioned at vital crossroads linking Long Dien district and Xuyen Moc district. Consequently, in comparison to other locales in Dat Do district, Phuoc Hai town enjoys distinct advantages and holistic potential for development, particularly in the realms of economy, culture, and the burgeoning field of beach tourism.
